For me, that discovery recently unfolded in the picturesque embrace of Lavender Bay, a lower North Shore gem that breathes art from every leafy corner.
Lavender Bay – a name that conjures images of delicate beauty and quiet contemplation. It’s an area steeped in creative history, where the whispers of artists past mingle with the gentle lapping of harbour waters. It’s the very ground where Nicole Kidman’s childhood imagination took flight, and where, more profoundly for me, Wendy Whiteley’s secret garden blossomed from the depths of grief into a breathtaking testament to love and resilience.
Currently immersed in the art of travel writing from my studies at the Writers Centre, I remember being nestled in this very suburb. During lunch breaks, I often found myself drawn to a spot beyond the nearby park, where the iconic Harbour Bridge frames a magnificent vista. However my gaze inevitably drifts to the vibrant tapestry of Wendy’s secret garden.

Wendy, in the wake of her partner’s passing, negotiated with the railways for disused land she overlooked, from her home transforming it into an oasis of beauty and solace.
