Not all dance practice ends in flawless pirouettes and standing ovations. Sometimes, it ends in the stark, sterile environment of a hospital emergency room, which is exactly where my journey took an unexpected turn a few years ago. One moment, I was immersed in the rhythm and motion at a dance studio; the next, a painful injury had torn my toenail away, marking the beginning of a long and arduous path to recovery.
That initial injury was more than just a physical setback. After five hours in the hospital, I was sent home to face a week off work and the start of a year-long series of podiatry treatments. It was a slow, painstaking process to nurse the nail back to health, demanding patience I didn’t know I had. Just as I thought I had put it all behind me, the world changed with the arrival of COVID. The virus brought its own challenges, including a cascade of allergic reactions that, bizarrely, targeted the weakest point in my body—my once-injured toe. The nail came away again.
This time, the frustration was immense. I tried to manage the recovery myself, but it resulted in a painful ingrown nail, forcing me back to the podiatrist’s chair. Now, I’m fitted with a nail brace for another six months. It’s a constant, physical reminder of a journey that has tested my spirit. In the meantime, practice doesn’t stop; it simply changes form. My dance studio is now my living room, where online classes fuel my passion and keep the dream of performing alive.
There are powerful lessons in this experience. The most critical is to choose your dance studio with care. The support of professional instructors and studio owners who genuinely uphold their duty of care is not a luxury; it’s essential. In my case, that support was absent, which taught me the importance of advocating for my own wellbeing and making a directional change.
This whole ordeal has been a lesson in resilience. Moving forward, for me, is a positive and deliberate act. It has sharpened my focus and deepened my longing to be back on stage, not just dancing, but truly performing. This drive is intrinsically linked to my pursuit of wellness on the move—a commitment to healing, growing, and finding strength in the face of setbacks. The stage awaits, and this time, the journey there is part of the performance itself.
