The Hats That Flew: Lessons in Style, Loss and Resilience

I never expected a hat to teach me about resilience. Yet as I sat in a courtroom during a double murder trial, my carefully chosen hat reminded me that even in the most rigid, severe places, a little whimsy and care can make all the difference.

After being made redundant from the airline, life felt unpredictable. Jury service came as an added challenge – I prayed they wouldn’t select me. When they did, I discovered I was part of a double murder trial. The weight of it was immense, yet somehow my hat became my small rebellion, my anchor, and my storytelling companion.

Other hats of course, had their own adventures. Some I placed beside me, only to return and find them gone. Others blew away into the river, dancing on the wind before vanishing. One met its end under someones foot. Each loss felt oddly symbolic, a quiet lesson in impermanence and care.

Today, I never leave a hat untied. Ribbons secure each one a simple gesture that speaks volumes, beauty and whimsy must be handled with attention and love, but they can still soar if the wind calls.

The hats are more than accessories – they are daily reminders of how to navigate the world:

With Elegance and playfullness

With attention to detail

and with resilience when life sweeps in expectedly

Even in small things, like a hat or a ribbon, we carry our story forward. I have learned to step beyond the gate with each piece I wear, with each choice I make. The wind may blow, the river may carry, and others may step where we hoped to land, but our essence – like the peacock rising – remains.

Every hat has a story. Every story carries a lesson. And every lesson is a step beyond the gate.
