Encore, Encore — A Dance Meant to Be Reborn

A couple of years ago, I had the privilege of performing a deeply emotional Tango — choreographed to Nothing Else Matters by Apocalyptica. It was a piece I poured my heart and soul into, a dance that spoke of strength, vulnerability, and resilience.

The performance was set for the beautiful Pullman Hotel. But on the night of the show, an unexpected flood forced a last-minute change to the Hilton Hotel. The new venue had charm, but the flooring — laid in haste — was more suited to student formals than a polished performance. The surface was sticky, like tar, and my beautiful Italian dance shoes couldn’t pivot. I was literally stuck.

In that moment, my incredible dance teacher lifted me — through the choreography and through the chaos. We made it through. But after the final step, I left like Cinderella at midnight, in tears.

My shoes, ruined by tar, were sent to a specialist in Perth, WA. Miraculously, they were restored. The suede saved. The dream preserved.

I was told afterward that the performance was still full of emotion — that it deserved to be seen again. But then COVID arrived, along with serious health challenges, and life took another pause.

Now, the fog has cleared. And I’m almost ready to return to the love of my life: dancing.

This performance still lives in me — and it deserves its encore.
It is time.
